This week at Tiny Chefs, we are excited to talk about the magic🪄–or, technically, the science🔬–behind baking! Looking at one of the most important ingredients in baking, we can learn what makes so many of our recipes that light and fluffy texture we all love so much: baking powder!
Why baking powder makes things rise — science in action! 🧪
Baking Powder is considered something called a leavening agent. A leavening agent is an ingredient used to produce gas in order to create air bubbles 🫧. These air bubbles are what cause things like cake 🎂 to rise and become fluffy rather than being flat and dense.
Without leavening agents like baking powder, some of our favorite treats–such as pancakes 🥞, muffins 🧁, and even donuts 🍩–would simply fall flat! Recipes typically only need a small amount of baking powder to get the desired effect but don’t underestimate its importance. If you ever leave out baking powder in a recipe that calls for it, you are sure to be disappointed!
